A Fun and Lighthearted Take on Marriage: ‘Vidya Vasula Aham’ Movie Review

Marriage dramedies are pretty common in Telugu cinema, but often they come with a moral lesson disguised as old-school fables, emphasizing the conservative and sacred aspects of marriage. It’s important for these films to have a clear voice that celebrates a happy ending when the protagonists find their own resolutions.

So when ‘Vidya Vasula Aham’ kicks off with the deities Vishnu and Lakshmi deciding to observe the lives of a newlywed couple, I was a bit skeptical. Luckily, director Manikanth Gelli avoids the typical stereotypes and instead presents a light-hearted story about two young souls, played by Rahul Vijay and Shivani Rajashekhar, who discover the true meaning of marriage.

The stakes in ‘Vidya Vasula Aham’ may seem low, as Vidya (Shivani) and Vasu (Rahul) don’t really challenge each other’s egos or self-esteem to the point of intense conflict. However, the film maintains a comedic tone throughout, even in its more serious moments. The constant banter between the couple is harmless and entertaining enough to keep us engaged. It’s a shame that Manikanth Gelli doesn’t delve deeper into the inner lives of the protagonists as the story progresses, because what initially grabs our attention is how Vidya and Vasu have unique personalities of their own. When Vidya reluctantly agrees to consider marriage after her parents’ persistence, she creates a personalized questionnaire to test the potential groom’s compatibility, judging them by her own standards. Vasu, on the other hand, fills in the form with wit and nonchalance.

‘Vidya Vasula Aham’ may have its flaws and limitations, but what keeps it entertaining is the sense of playfulness and humor that runs throughout the story. The film features a talented cast including Shivani Rajashekar, Rahul Vijay, Abhinaya, Ravi Varma, and Viva Raghav, who bring their characters to life under the direction of Manikanth Gelli.

While the movie may not be a masterpiece, it still manages to keep the audience engaged with its light-hearted narrative. The rating of 2.5/5 suggests that it’s worth a watch, despite its shortcomings. So if you’re in the mood for a film that offers some laughs and a fun experience, ‘Vidya Vasula Aham’ could be a good choice.
