Review of the movie ‘Secret’: Great ideas fall flat due to poor execution

Even though Swamy’s writing brilliance may have dimmed in recent years, his reputation still sparks a level of anticipation.

When SN Swamy announced his directorial venture, many Malayali movie enthusiasts, especially those from the ’80s and ’90s, were genuinely intrigued. Swamy is known for crafting some of the most memorable thrillers of that era, like the iconic CBI series, Irupatham Noottandu, Moonnam Mura, and Dhruvam.

Despite Swamy’s writing prowess fading in recent years, his reputation still stirs up a level of anticipation. However, his first directorial work, Secret, seems to have had a negative impact on his already declining career.

The plot follows three friends, portrayed by Dhyan Sreenivasan, Aparna Das, and Jacob Gregory, on a trip to Thanjavur for a wedding. When an astrologer predicts the cancellation of Midhun’s (Dhyan) wedding due to his bride’s death, he seeks help from Mathews (Ranjith), a psychological professor from the ‘Believe in You’ community. Mathews baffles Midhun (and the audience) with complex scientific terms like ‘System of entropy’ and ‘Synchronicity,’ leading to a peculiar solution: Midhun must save three individuals from death to prevent his girlfriend’s demise.

So, in the past, when Swamy talked about CBI 5 and this whole ‘basket killings’ concept, it really got people curious. But when the movie actually came out, it was a bit of a letdown. Similarly, in his latest work, Secret, Swamy hyped up all these cool ideas, calling it a “motivational drama.” However, the movie ended up being a bit of a snooze fest, offering little motivation except maybe to endure its entire runtime.
