Romantic dramas thrive on emotion, transformation, and relatability. Sweetheart!, directed by Swineeth S Sukumar, attempts to blend heartfelt emotion with coming-of-age themes, but unfortunately, the film is more style than substance. With a title that screams surprise—literally, thanks to the exclamation mark—Sweetheart! ends up being a predictable journey through romantic tropes.

Plot Overview: A Predictable Path

The film kicks off with lovers Manu (Gopika Ramesh) and Vasu (Rio Raj) parting ways. Soon after, Manu discovers she’s pregnant, leading to the age-old question—will they, won’t they? The plot follows a conventional arc, struggling to break free from its formulaic structure. While the narrative tries to be profound, the lack of depth in storytelling leaves much to be desired.

Weak Characterisation: Sketches, Not People

One of the film’s major flaws lies in its shallow character development. We know very little about Manu and Vasu beyond surface-level traits. Vasu’s resistance to fatherhood is chalked up to childhood trauma, but this explanation feels rushed and overly melodramatic. Meanwhile, Manu’s unwavering affection for Vasu, even after his toxic behaviors—including an instance of slut-shaming—feels baffling and underexplored.

Screenplay Structure: A Pseudo-Nonlinear Letdown

Sweetheart! experiments with a non-linear narrative structure, teasing moments early on and revealing them later for dramatic effect. However, these revelations add little to the story.
